Museums in Chemnitz

Chemnitz is a very cultural city and therefore offers you many possibilities to inform yourself about culture, history and art. Here we would like to give you a short overview of the museums in Chemnitz.


King Albert Museum

Here you will find the city's art collection. You can see a total of 70,000 exhibits from the 16th to 21st century as well as the second largest exhibition of works by Karl Schmidt-Rottluffs. The museum is divided into three different categories:"Painting and Sculpture","Graphic Cabinet" and "Textile and Decorative Arts".

Museum Gunzenhauser

Once an art lover, Dr. Alfred Gunzenhauser bequeathed his art collection to the city of Chemnitz. From graphic works from the turn of the century to works of art from the Weimar Republic, everything is represented among the approximately 2,500 works. The museum's centrepiece is the collection of 380 works by Otto Dix.

Henry van de Velde Museum in the Villa Esche

The architect of the same name designed the villa Esche and many other buildings. Today, it is one of the most outstanding architectural achievements in Chemnitz and was therefore declared a historical monument. Here you can see works of art and the original furnishings of the dining and music room.

The State Museum of Archaeology Chemnitz

This museum is hosted by the unique architectural department store Schocken. It was only opened in 2015 and houses archaeological excavations from Saxony, which range from the first hunters and collectors of the region to early industrialisation, on a permanent exhibition of around 3,000 m². In addition, you will also find a variety of changing special exhibitions here.

Castle Mountain Museum

Experience the city's history at the place of origin of the city itself. The town was founded in the 12th century, here you can find out everything about the town from the Middle Ages to modern times.

Museum of Natural History

The oldest and largest museum in the city is the Museum of Natural History. Here you can see petrified trees, minerals and crystals as well as rocks from all over the world. You will also find a historical collection of entomology and valuable herbaria.

New Saxon Gallery

Here you will find contemporary art. The Chemnitzer Kunsthütte association presents mainly works of art from the surrounding area and Saxony. Since 1945, around 10,000 works have been collected here.
